Dear Mr Murray

I have not heard of you for so long that I feel bound to write to you. Fisher told me that you were pretty well and that you were settled now in Surrey. He also said that you were perhaps coming up this term. I do hope you are. I very much want to see you again.

I am rather cross just now, for

I have just been rejected at All Souls, when everybody thought I was safe. I hate not to do the things I am expected to do.

I am up all this term reading law. Then in January I go up to a solicitor's office in London as a prelude to the Bar. I shall be there till June: then I suppose I shall have to work for another attempt at a prize fellowship next autumn. After that I shall be in a barrister's chambers.

Have you been doing much literary work? I am very impatient to read your new Greek play.

I hope your wife and the children are well, and that you find Surrey suiting you.
