My dear Murray
Many thanks for your delightful letter. I got it on arriving from Scotland this morning, and laughed so much that I forgot my usual misery on coming to the horrible south country. I think you say just the truth about

my foolish story. I think I understand Lewis, but Stocks is merely a peg on which to hang some of my private dislikes. But I bet you anything he got into Parliament. His personality, split up, recently got in for the Border Burghs, and was happily defeated for Dumfrieshire. Besides he was a Roseberyite – I am sure of

it.
I am glad you think I am getting better at love-making. I hate the stuff. I sit and blush with disgust when I am writing it. But I am coming down some day to hunt up that play of yours, wherein is the scene which you are afraid to make public. I hope you are not serious & that your play is coming out all right.
With kind regards to Lady Mary & the children
Yours very sincerely
John Buchan
