Dear Lady Mary

I am writing to tell you what you may have already heard — that I have accepted the offer of Lord Milner's Political Private Secretaryship and sail for S. Africa on Sept. 14th. I was in great doubts at first, but I was

advised that even as regards my prospects at the Bar it was the best thing I could do. I propse to stay out 2 years, though of course one may get drawn into administrative work for good. I feel it a great honour to be associated with a man I admire in so serious and difficult a business. I only hope I may

be of use.

I hope you are having a pleasant holiday and that your husband & all the children are well. Do write to me, please, and give me advice.
