Dear Miss Markham

I am nearly as angry as you about S. Africa. The only remedy now is fire from Heaven, but I see no sign of it in this weather. At the same time I don't think anything very bad is going

to happen. It is the insufferable insults to Lord M. which make me furious. I sat through all the debates on Wednesday - you may imagine with what feelings! I would far rather have had the vote of censure passed, than

have it burked by the intolerable patronage of Winston. And I am very angry at this talk about getting up a national testimonial to Lord M. I don't mind Halifax's motion in the Lords, but the journalistic enterprise which the 'Morning Post' talks of seems to me most undignified. It is far better to

leave the heathen to rage unnoticed, & that is what Lord M. wants, I know.

I have been much cheered by the attitude of some of the Labour Party - Ramsay Macdonald especially. I rather agree with Lord M. that they are our natural allies. Fatted souls like Liberals can never be Imperialists.

I am much out of temper & look forward to a week's salmonfishing in Sutherland to put me in love with life again
