I still think 'editorial'! We have the Royal 'we', the editorial 'we' (and, possibly, the authorial 'we', though I don't know anything about Jock Lawrence). I think the first letter is a Greek E, and there's a dot for the i.
You are right, of course. It's still a pretty mystifying sentence!
