My dear Strachey,

I have to acknowledge your letter of January 21st. containing your proposal regarding the "Spectator".

I am prepared to accept your offer on the terms proposed, which I may recapitulate:

1. I undertake to do a maximum of a review and two leaders or sub-leader, 1.e. three long articles and nine notes per week. I also do the magazines when required and such editorial work as may be necessary both in normal and holiday times. In normal times I understand that I should only be asked to do seven notes. In general, I do anything whuch may be considered within my duties as one of your Assistant Editors.

2. I do my work at the "Spectator" Office and undertake to let no legal work interfere with my duties towards the "Spectator" and to write for no other newspapers.

3. My leave in each year is to be six weeks and the time of holiday is to be settled by arrangement with you and Graves.

4. My salary is to be £800 per annum, inclusive. But, as we arranged in conversation, on Mr. Townsend's death or the cessation

of his pension, this salary is to be increased to £1000.

5. Our arrangement is to be terminated by a year's notice on either side.

I think these conditions contain all the material points of our arrangement, but if anything else occurs to you which you would like included, it might be made the subject of another letter from you to me.

I return your original letter that you may have it copied. If you can let me have a copy of this I shall be glad.

Yours ever,

(Sgd.) JOHN BUCHAN.
