22, SOUTH STREET, PARK LANE, W.

29th January, 1906.

My dear Buchan,

I forgot to say in my letter of last week that in cases where I did not ask you to do a sub-leader, I should expect as an equivalent a couple of books or so on current literature. I have no doubt you would have no objection to this, but it is just as well to put it in writing. I also ought to have said that the arrangement agreed on by these letters supersedes any other arrangements actual or prospective that I have made with you. I say this in case in my letters to you while you were in South Africa I may have discussed other possibilities, terms and conditions. It is understood between us that these are not to be read in connection with my letter of last Sunday, i.e. 21st. January, 1906, but that all other writing and talk between us is superseded by the present arrangement. I feel it necessary to say this as I did not keep any copies of the previous letters to you [handwritten addition] and cannot remember what is in them.

Yours very sincerely, J S Loe Strachey

P.S. Your letter just arrived. It is correct except as regards (2). I want it to be clearly understood that you "leave the Bar"

as I said in my letter of 21st. January, 1906, though this need not mean that you may not do a little legal writing for your amusement. What I want to avoid is your going into Court and your mind being occupied with hard and difficult legal problems. I am afraid I must make this a sine qua non. Please let me have a line assenting to this. [handwritten addition] It is understood that when I am away Graves is Editor & you Assistant Editor. J SL S
