My dearest wee Mother
I was very glad to get your kind letter on Saturday night. I meant the Robert Bridges for Alastair, when Walter has already got the Mrs Meynell. I am very sorry for little Beatrice. Do you think we should send her something at New Year? I read Nan's 'Memoir' through every day, & the more I read it the more I think of it. Has she sent a copy to Mr Heberden [of Brasenose, Principal]. If not, if she will send me one, I will do it. I think he ought to have one. I had a long letter from John Simon explaining his appearance at Peebles. He says

he made the promise, which he had forgotten, 4 years ago, before I became a candidate. Judging from the reports he does not seem to have created a good impression.
On Saturday afternoon we had a big drive into the country. Yesterday I went to church & then we sat out on the sunny Esplanade. It was very cold in the afternoon & I took Alice for a walk. Susie's cold is much benefited by the place, & I am very well. Alice & John, I think, find the air too strong, for they are inclined to be peevish, but they will feel the good of it afterwards.
Much love to all
Your affectionate son
John
