My dearest wee Mother

We are having very cold wet weather here. Nan arrived last night looking very well & in good spirits. Mrs Fleming & Major Rawling [ST: Cecil Rawling] came to tea. Nan looked so pretty & nicely dressed in her best evening-gown. We had a pleasant little dinner-party. - The Sydenhams, Mrs [Craig-]Sellar, Charlie Lyall & Bernard Holland (who wrote the 'Blackwood' article on [Macguire of Brassfield?]). Nan was very pleased with Mr John, & the children were delighted to see her.

We did pretty well in Poplar yesterday, adding on 1100 votes to the Unionist poll, & reducing the majority to 274. If the election had not been so rushed we should probably have won the seat. Charlie Lyall thinks there will be a General Election in June.

I must try & see Old Mrs Howden when I come to Peebles next week. I am glad you went to see her. She is a fine old body, & John Howden was the salt of the earth.

I hope you are keeping well. I am greatly looking forward to seeing you all next week-end. Will Alastair come out for the week-end?

Much love to all

Your affectionate son

John
