My dearest wee Mother
This is a very ill day of even-down rain, but it is less cold. Yesterday was a cold grey day. I walked to Pont Street & had a very good New Year sermon from Fleming. I took up the offertory. In the afternoon Susie went to a nursing-home to see Lady Hilda Strutt. I read to Alice in the evening. Uncle Charlie [ST: my uncle Charles Stuart-Wortley] came to tea & was amazed at Mr John who is really a magnificent little boy. Susie is lying up to-day for 4 days, but she will be up before you come. I got my

invitation this morning to Robbie's soiree. I hope it will be a success. I am getting very cross - and so is the Senior Clerk - at the way they sing prose psalms & chants & generally imitate the Anglican service. If I wanted that I could get it far better at an Anglican church.
I hope the Mhor's seediness is over & that he has gone back to Glasgow in better heart. And I do hope, old body, that you are all right now. It will be a great disappointment if any thing stops your coming up on Saturday.
Much love to all
Your affectionate son
John
