My dearest little Susie
This is another gorgeous Summer day. Yesterday I was with the Indian cavalry & saw Mike Rimington, who was very amusing. Pertap [Pratap] Singh is a great fellow. He sits on an Indian chair outside his home in the village street in the sun, with his sword lying on his old knees, meditating. He is determined to die in this war as a Rajput should, and all he asks is to get a chance of pigsticking the Bosches. Mike Rimington spends all his time studying maps of Germany, so as to be ready.
There is a great deal of anger here at the D. Mail's attacks on K. [ST: Kitchener]. They were really very absurd. K is the only person who commands confidence both in the Army & at home. He is not the ideal man, but

he is 70 per cent of it & nobody else is more than 50.
I hope it is as jolly weather at Checkendon as here. How are the blessings? I long to see them again. I suppose you will be down there most of the week. I shall come straight there on Friday.
Much love
Your ever devoted
John
