My dearest little Susie

I was very glad to get your kind letter yesterday. I had a very quiet day, writing most of the time. It was the most gorgeous weather & I had several walks in very pretty French country. Billy Lambton rode out to see me in the afternoon. He is looking very strained & tired. He says he is going to get Milner out on a visit.

I shall come straight to Checkendon on Friday, getting there at 6.25 pm. to Reading where I hope you will send something to meet me. I shan't go up to London again till Monday.

Tell me if you hear from Gerald & Marnie. The casualties are terrible & yet the general situation is good, & I hope that the coming in of Italy will relieve the very serious situation in

the East. People out here are quite cheery. I am going to try & find the 8th Royal Scots, the Peebles battalion. They have just had a heavy fight & five Peebles men are dead, including Mulholland.

D. Haig has definitely forbidden me to go & spend a night with Jerry Ruthven. It is all along of that unspeakable rascal Repington. I am going to look for him with a shot gun when I get back
