Dear Sir,

You must be tired of people writing to thank you for your History of the War: but I have a special reason for writing. I was sent away by doctor's orders for three months: and I consoled myself by starting to write some short essays, for boys & girls only, about the War: not pretending to try to describe the course of the War, but talking about the nations, & about things before the War: just essays for boys & girls only, which might lead them toward studying the War as they ought. And I found myself again

and again telling them to study your History, and quoting from your History. I felt that I might take this liberty: and I hope that you will let me send you a copy of the little book when it comes out, some time before Christmas. It will come with sincere gratitude to you for all the happiness and all the teaching which your History has given me. Believe me, dear Sir, Yours faithfully

You will at any rate like the illustrations of the little book. For the proprietors of Punch gave us leave to reproduce some of the War-cartoons.
