My own little darling

I hoped to get back last night, but they insisted on keeping me till this morning in hospital. It has been a most interesting time here & I greatly enjoyed it. I am perfectly well now, better than I have been for weeks. I hope you haven't been worrying. It is an experience I wouldn't have missed for a good deal, & I have been in the best of good company - real plucky jolly chaps, some of them very badly wounded. I had a great fight to keep from being sent to the base, which would have been ridiculous.

I was very glad to get your letter yesterday. I enclose you a cutting. I am very flattered at being compared to Sir Walter Scott.

I always hunger for news of you & the children. Mr John is a quaint old man.

This is a beautiful autumn morning. I do hope it lasts, for the weather is very important just now. I am sorry you are getting my letters so irregularly. I wrote every morning.

I have heard no news for 3 days for in this place one is shut out from the world. My servant brought me my mail every morning.

Bless you, my little one

With much love to all

Your ever devoted

John
