76, PORTLAND PLACE, W.

Saturday Dec. 9. 1916

My own darling

Your letter hasn't come in yet. It is so funny that this generally happens on a Saturday. I am better today & coughing much less - I found Billy not quite the thing. His throat is his weak point just like the others - but he is his usual good tempered delicious self.

Oh John what is happening in this welter of politics. I feel very strongly that you should be made under sec. for the War office. You would help R. with the politicians & you understand the army point of view - What about Sir Robert F's [Finlay] seat? He is certain to be made Chancellor.

You see I feel that the danger point is here. The army is full

of brains efficiency & courage. Here in this quicksand of politics, depression. staleness, rumours etc is the place where you want the strong people, who can keep their heads. I am not in the least frightened about the end of the war, but I am frightened about how much we shall get done here this winter. My point is - this side is the important thing to get right now

I know that you probably will smile as you read this & say "She says all this because she longs for me to come home", but darling you know that I am "au fond" patriotic & really say it because I feel it. A Frenchman said in some war, on being asked what would happen, that, it would be all right, "pourvu que les civiliens tiennent" well I do want you to help them to "tenir". I shall register this.

Your own little Moufflée

do tell you [me] what time roughly to expect you.
