My own little darling
This is a pouring wet day and I am stumping about in field boots. My inside is a little better to-day. I am living very carefully on a strict diet. I have not heard from you yet, though I have had several letters from London & one from Mother. I do hope you are not very doleful, poor little Moffit. I can't tell you [how] sorry I am for you - likewise for myself; but we must simply make the best of things.
I do hope the rain will stop as it interferes badly with operations. Obby [ST: Osborne] Beauclerk is here on Haig's staff - a nice mad fellow. I had a walk with him this morning after breakfast.
Once I get fit I think I shall be happy enough here, & beyond doubt

my work is outstandingly interesting, & will always get more so. I shall be able to come home pretty often, though only for short spells. I have a car of my own & a chauffeur who comes from the identical place we used to live in in Glasgow. I must say I am enormously attracted by Sir D. Haig now. He seems to have quite changed since I remember him. He is very gentle & wise.
You will have the little boys back on Monday. Mother writes that she will be heartbroken when they go.
Do keep cheerful, my darling, & take great care of yourself
Your ever devoted
John
