My own little darling
I was delighted to get two letters from you last night. It cheered me up greatly. But I am afraid you have not got the letter yet which may upset you. I do hope you are going to be philosophical about my absence. I hate it very much, but it is clearly my duty. I shall be missing you very much night & day, but it is what most people have to put

up with now.
My health is very much better this morning, & I am getting over the leaden depression of the past four days. I am glad [George?] has been kind about Jerry.
Isn't it terribly sad about Bimbo Tennant [ST: Edward Tennant]? That was a wonderful little poem of his in the Times. I must write to poor

Pamela.
The people here are very nice, and I could not ask for better colleagues. Do you know a nice boy called Lord Gort? Stuart Menzies came up yesterday. He is a very good fellow & very able. He was talking a lot about Arthur, of whose wound he had not heard.
If you could send me a small electric torch it would be a great boon. This place is black dark at night & I bark my shins badly, as

This job is rather more safe than the F.O. You hear the guns but that is the only sign of war.
I hope you get the little boys safely home on Monday. How I long to see them! And the little Ladykin!
However I am all right now & only suffering from the lack of the B.M. [ST: British Matron, nickname for SB]
Much love to all
Your ever devoted
John
