My dearest old Mother
This is a fine bright day. I think the weather has taken a turn at last. August in London is really rather nice: it is so quiet - at least in our part of the world. I am thinking that this time last year we were at Harehope with old Williamson. I wish we had him here again. The news from the Ladykin is very good. She spends all her time in the stables with the grooms, which is a wholesome sign. We think she

ought to have her adenoids removed before many months, as she is apt to be husky in the morning & troubled with her throat.
I hoped to send you a copy of "Prester John" to-day, but something has happened to the presses & they won't be here till the end of the week. We are going down to the Malcolms at Walton for the week-end. I am wondering very much how you & Father are. Is there anything I can send him? And I do solemnly abjure you to tell me honestly what you want for your birthday. The time draws nigh.
Much love to all
Your affectionate son
John
