Dear Mr Buchan,

Before thanking you for your Raleigh I waited till I had read the book, as I have now, and with much pleasure.

You have brought out with picturesqueness and force the empire-building qualities in the man.

It is on that account that, perhaps, most of Elizabethan statesmen and fighters, he lives with us still; as I always think, when, crossing London Bridge, I turn from book or paper to

look at the Tower.

PS: But I do not agree that Essex - p.111 - "loves me". Essex notoriously hated Raleigh all through.

Raleigh might have said - "who, men say, hates me though he loves me not, has" etc.
