4, CARLTON GARDENS, PALL MALL, S.W.
Private [underlined] May 16th, 1912.
My dear Mr Buchan
I have been very carefully considering the suggestion contained in your letter, but, with the best will in the world, I feel it would be wrong of me to hold out any hope. It is doubtful whether I shall undertake any [underlined] political meetings in Scotland this Autumn; and, in any event, I do not suppose I shall speak more than once. Whether this be so or not, I must, of course, be guided by the Party organisers in the selection of the place.
I am delighted to hear that you feel so sanguine of success.
Yours sincerely,
Arthur James Balfour
