My dear John,

I must write you a line of thanks for a very happy evening! for last night after dinner I settled down to your "Montrose" - & it was only as the last page

fell from my reluctant fingers, that I realized that there existed such things as bed & time. - What a great tale it is - greatly told - I am looking forward to reading it again, & I am sending off a copy to poor Maurice in his rest-cure - another word of thanks too, for not worrying

one with the notes on the fair page - a thing I am always grateful for.

I do so hope that you & Susie & the children are all flourishing. We have had a trying summer - Maurice has had a complete nervous break-down. He did a rest-cure here, & though, it

seemed successful, at the first strain he fell back again - & last week had to go to a place at Ascot, where he will be for many weeks I am afraid.
