My dear John,

Your volume of Montrose has just reached me and I must send you a line of warmest thanks. It is indeed a welcome addition to the library. As

yet I have only read the really beautiful and touching dedication; but I wanted to thank you for it at once.

I trust that every thing goes well with you, Mrs John and the children.

My mother and I will both be in London soon after the 12th of October and then we must arrange to meet.

Our weather remains exceptionally fine; but east wind has somewhat

interfered with the stalking.
