My dearest wee Mother

I spent all Saturday at Eastbourne with our Employers trip, & made there a speech at the luncheon. It turned out a fine day & the shore of the English Channel & Beachy Head looked very pretty. I got home to London at 4.20 & was hung up on the way by the Anti-Welsh-Disestablishment Procession. I was very glad to get Nan's letter. I do hope the trip has benefited her & you. It was a pleasure & a privilege to go with her. I hope the servant from Manor will be a success. We caught the 5.30 train to Terling in

Essex to stay with the Rayleighs. Poor Lady Rayleigh is still very much broken by her son's death [ST: William Strutt died young]. She asked me all about our Willie, who died the week before, & cried a lot. There was a nice party - Edmund Warre, Tommy [ST: Sir Alan] Lascelles, Lord & Lady Wolmer, Lady Evelyn Grey, & Violet Asquith [ST: (Bonham Carter)], [ST: omit] The latter is a bore, for she [involves?] you in long political discussions. The old minister in church yesterday preached about Welsh Disestablishment & I hope she was conscience-stricken. Joan Balfour was there too, a daughter of Lady Frances, & a very pretty girl. We came up early this morning to let Susie get to work at her bazaar. I wish it was over.

Much love to all

Your affectionate son

J.Buch John
