Sheila and Isla were the daughters of William Charles Macpherson, 4th of Blairgowrie.

Their father was a senior officer of the Indian Civil Service, and Isla turned down a proposal of marriage by Willie, ICS officer and JB's brother, two years before he died in 1912. The verses she mentions are JB's poem, Fratri dilectissimo, about Willie which is on the dedication page of 'Montrose'.
