Your kind message I must acknowledge by something more than a sentence. It is a real solace to find a friend who thinks of my poor E in the midst of this avalanche of

bother. What would I not give to have her here - and what a fate for this to happen without her to share in it. But one must go on: I often say to myself

And where is she without whose smile

Success is but a worse despair,

And every gain a waste of while

- And she not there, & she not there.
