My dearest wee Mother
This is another soft bright day. Surely the weather of this country has taken a curious twist. Alice is almost all right though she still barks a little, but Mr John looks as if he were blowing up for a heavy cold. Harold Cox sent me last night some correspondence he had had with Maclean: Maclean declared I was not a Free trader, & H.C. gave him a proper setting-down. Maclean is like a sort of

half-witted dominie who gets hold of a phrase and mumbles it.
We dined with Mrs Grosvenor last night & met Lady Helmsley & Sibyl Grey & Walter Elliot. "Awfully like Mrs Wishart"[ST: *] is going into Punch - tell Nan. I hope Alastair is getting rid of his cold. 'Lord Ardwall' is out today. I wonder how people will like it.
I hope you are keeping well
Much love, wee body
Your affectionate son
John
