Dear Mr Buchan,

I was delighted this morning by the receipt of your life of Lord Ardwell, which I have been devouring ever since. Thank you many times for it.

Luckily for my one-eyed condition, the type is very distinct & the matter both interesting &

familiar. I miss the expletives which I had been led to expect, but which my imagination can readily supply.

The writing of the Life has evidently been a work of love on your part, & its success must be very gratifying to Lady Ardwell & his friends. As regards myself the personality for which we all had a great affection was brough prominently before me.
