Yes, that was a man, or rather a Scotsman which is better. A kind of Scotch Doctor Johnson at bottom. I love the story of his making you finish the walk you had undertaken, - "the uncovenanted boots" and many other touches. I know the "insolence" of the "Galloway blackcock"; often have I seen them sitting on the stooks in my

walks through the Covenanters country - the great black devils!

Yes, I think he would have been a "persecutor" but subsequently a Williamite, and I'm thinking he would not have joined your man Montrose. He is one of those who carry on the world as they find it, not a leader of folorn hopes of any kind. See the picture at the beginning! Good!
