My dear Buchan,

Very many thanks for your kind letter and welcome congratulations, never more welcome than when they come from old pupils. I think you go far in calling the House of Lords an amusing tribunal - that is for its members; to those outside I daresay it is a screaming

farce, but I hope you get this impression from finding your occupation as a candidate amusing, as well as interesting, which I am sure it is.

I too wish we could meet sometimes - let us do more than wish! Will it be agreeable to Mrs Buchan for my wife to call on her? if so,

we can then hope to see I meet you prandially, if you don't give up to your constituency what was meant for mankind - I mean dinner time.
