My dear Susie,
you can imagine my horror when I saw - what I hardly ever get a chance of seeing - the Times 3 days ago & saw that John had been operated on. I was afraid it had been his old enemy, who had taken advantage of the strenuous life John was leading in France the irregular meals & physical strain of long drives to trouble him again. I can hardly say how thankful I am

to hear he is going on well.
I never thought that within 4 days I should hear of the sufferings of my 2 truest friends of the old Oxford days. Johnnie Jameson was run into when on a motor bike (dangerous things motor bikes) by a motor and he writes me from Leeds 2nd Northern General Hospital that the military sawbones and local Sangrados have wrought upon the original injury so potently that he will have a twisted leg and limp the rest of his days.

In regard to the other matter, I am very much cheered up by the news, although I still foresee difficulties. I could ask for nothing better than to be Jock the Laird's man to John. And as for the other kind thought it is like you, but don't fear, I'll find a good shake down.
Cheer the invalid and wish him a speedy recovery.
I am so glad things are going well but it must have been a very anxious time for you.
Best love to John1 & John2 & the bairns
Ever yours
Stair A. Gillon.
