11A PORTLAND PLACE, LONDON, W.1.

10 May 1921

Dear John,

In rereading that spiderish elegant scrawl - so perplexing to our modern type-script-spoiled eyes - it seems to me that I have made a stupid mistake in the wording. And of course I transmitted the errors to you in my transcription.

Did I put a ? at the end of line 12?

Lines 13 & 14 I am nearly certain shd. read as follows: -

"Hospitium nigris intravit crura cothurnis Indutus? Bellum movit ut ante Venus?"

How could I have made such a muddle? For the words are not really very much alike.

Ambrose is an ass. He would have it there was a movement on foot to have me made an honorary fellow of Brasenose. I cannot believe it.

Just off to Edgerston for a fortnight. If I shd. be marooned there by civil war shall I repine?

Yours ever

Lines 13 & 14 I am nearly certain should read as follows: -

"Hospitium nigris intravit crura ['cothurnis' omitted] Indutus? Bellum movit ut "ante Venus?"

How could I have made such a muddle? For the words are not really very much alike.

Ambrose is an ass. He would have it there was a movement on foot to have me made an honorary fellow of Brasenose. I cannot believe it.
