Elsfield
May: 16: 21
My dearest wee Mother
I got your kind letter on Saturday. It is tremendously good of you to want to have the children. They are wild to come, but I believe it would be better if they went to the sea. May we leave it over for a little till I see you again? You are the kindest of grandmothers. We opened Mrs [R?]'s short-bread. Was that all right?
It has been lovely weather over the

week-end. On Saturday morning I had a long walk. Elsfield is nearly as bad as Bank House. Dougie & Malcolm, Miss Pember, & the late Viceroy of India, Lord Chelmsford, turned up to luncheon. Then Col. Lawrence of Arabia arrived, & at tea we had Philip & Lady Ottoline Morrell. We shot our rooks at 6.pm & got 77. Mr John came in time & shot - very self-conscious, with the air of a returned traveller. Yesterday afternoon

we had a perfect drove of people - Sir Henry Birchenough, Lionel Curtis, Bob [ST: now Lord] Brand, Commander Sandford V.C (the hero of Zeebrugge) a S. African called Rose-Innes, & a great many more.
Mr John has been delightful. I have just seen him off - rather unwillingly. He says he loves waking on Sunday morning. But he seems very happy at school, & is very well. We are all well, & for the past 10 days my health has been excellent. Dr Weir

says I am to finish some queer wee powders he sent me, & then go to see him again.
Gerard Sellar comes to-morrow morning, & I go off to Edinburgh by the night train, returning the following night. It is a bore, but it can't be helped. I wish I were coming out to Peebles.
I will do what I can about Archie Rae, but I fear it is pretty hopeless
Much love to all
