My dear Mr Buchan, whom I should like to address henceforth as my dear Buchan (with due reciprocation) there is one thing more I have to ask of you. Will you allow me to dedicate that book to you? It shall be done in five lines, which will allow of no fulsomeness.

You have the right to say 'Timeo Danaos'; but the 'gift', of course, is all the other way. I want to commemorate

I shall finish correcting the proofs this week. I think I have improved the thing. But we shall see!
