My dear John.
Vol I arrived this afternoon and as I am just off to Toronto then to Quebec. I take up my 'Waterman's Fountain' to say 'Thank you' before I have done more than satisfied myself that you had written my name in it saying that it was from yourself.

You say 'you are venturing to send the first volume'.
No venture is worthy of that name unless it is carried to completion, so vols II. III & IV. are expected and looked forward to and during the winter you may get some remarks on them.
We have settled down - myself as Govr Genl i e a Governor who doesn't govern and a

General who cannot generalize, and my 'better ½,' as Governess General, but we are both happy as the natives of the country said they were pleased to see us - in fact were quite demonstrative about it. But 'nuff said'
