[May we drop prefixes - please?]

The very kind & most welcome gift of your book came on Wednesday. I had a journey to & from London with it, & I was delighted & amazed with it. The really extraordinary fact is that while one reads one lives again in the great days. Later judgments may have crept in to correct original impressions: but as that has happened with us all, without our recognition or remembrance of the change, one feels in reading that the events recorded are passing under one's eye again. The story is perfectly fresh. And the English!!

I have revelled in it.

So it follows that I am most grateful. Of all gifts I like best that of a book by a man who has written it.

My only regret is that your stay was so short! I told my boy at Winchester you had been & he was very excited; reminded me of "Prester John" on the films, & of the thrills of the "39 Steps" & so on, and expressed the hope that I should be able to keep you for him at Christmas!

My very best regards & warmest thanks

Yours very sincerely

Berkley Moynihan
