Dear Mr. Buchan,

I am more grieved than I can say at no acknowledgment having been sent to you of the first volume of your History of the War.

The fact is, when at Balmoral I received a letter from you, undated, saying that you were sending a copy for His Majesty's acceptance: but the book went to my house in London and was not laid before the King till His Majesty's return here, when I thought a letter had been written to you.

The second volume arrived also at my house a week ago, and I submitted it to the King on his return from Sandringham last Monday.

2.

Needless to say His Majesty is most grateful to you for these volumes of your extremely interesting and valuable work: and he will look forward with pleasure to receiving the other volumes when published and the work will be placed in the King's special War Library.

Believe me, Yours very truly,

Stamfordham
