My dearest wee Mother

I was very glad to get Nan's letter this morning, & to hear that Broughton was doing you a little good. I sent her off the first proofs of her book yesterday. Tell her to correct it as much as she likes. Will she

give me permission to review the proofs & make any small changes when they come back? If so, will she return them to me?

I had a long letter from John Martin (Walter will know what I mean) He thinks Walter has been killed. I will send it on to you.

My eye is better. I am going

down to Kent this evening, & Hugh Walpole [ST: novelist] is coming to-morrow for the week-end.

Susie & the children seem to be well.

I look forward very much to reading Nan's thing on old Alastair.

The P.M. was quite good in the House of Commons yesterday. I hope to get out to France before the end of the month, but it will be a

very hurried rush. My people are beginning to go on holiday, & that doesn't make my job lighter. They need it badly too, for several have had breakdowns from overwork.
