76, PORTLAND PLACE. W.

Aug: 9: 17

My dearest wee Mother

We had a very wet evening yesterday but to-day it is bright & clear, and a little colder. Alice has got her beloved governess, Miss Burneau, staying in Kent for a few days, & Mr John has begun lessons with her.

I had a heavy day yesterday with long committees at the Post Office & the War Office, & didn't get back till after 9. The Allied Conference was still going on, but it is over now. Cecil Rawling may come up in the evening. He goes back to France on Saturday.

I have no news this morning. I hope to go down to Kent to-morrow evening, but I am not sure. The absence of Mrs Killick, my shorthand writer, on a week's holiday plays the deuce with my work. Nobody else understands my papers.

I am wondering what Broughton is like. The hay will be in, I suppose.

Fred Oliver, lucky man, goes off to his house in the Cheviots on Saturday for a long holiday.

I do hope your health is improving. Is it true that you walked to Biggar the other day.

Much love

[illegible]

John
