My dearest little one
I have had a hustle of a day. I dined last night with James Baird & left my belt in the house, so I had to dress in mufti today. I lunched with the new Italian Military Attaché - such a good fellow, called Colonel Mola. We must ask him to dine when you come back. I had an American Committee meeting this afternoon, & I am dining with Freddy Guest's War Aims Committee at the House of Commons.
I was so glad to get your letter last night and to hear

about the visit to Penshurst. You & I & Hugh Walpole might go over next week-end. I saw the American [ST: troops] march through to-day. Such big lean clean-shaven solemn-faced men! They impressed me a good deal. I don't think their welcome was very good, for we had far too short notice.
The P.M. has been closeted with generals all day. I am waiting to hear from Milner before acting.
Much love, my own little one, & my blessing to the Blessings.
Your ever devoted
John
