August. 1st. 1918.

Private.

Colonel John Buchan,

Ministry of Information,

Norfolk St.

My dear Buchan,

I have received your very kind private and confidential letter. If there is to be an election in the autumn I should be very glad indeed if we are not opponents. Our views are identical on the overmastering question of the war. However, as you say, things may change before November, and I quite understand you hold yourself free in that event to take what action you may deem to be consistent with your duty.

• With renewed thanks for so kindly writing to me,

Yours very sincerely,

Donald Maclean

Colonel John Buchan
