My dearest wee Mother

Yesterday was an awesome day of rain & so is this. It is a pity for my short holiday. Hugh Macmillan & I came up last night. The Heberdens [ST: Principal Heberden & his sister] are very kind & we had a pleasant

dinner in Common Room. But Oxford is a queer bereaved little place - hardly any undergraduates. I went to communion in St Mary's this morning. I took Hugh to see Willie's tablet in [ST: Brasenose] chapel, and we went round a lot of colleges.

At Balliol the Master entertained us & I saw wee Johnnie Jameson.

We go to Bampton [ST: in Oxfordshire] this afternoon, but I'm wishing the rain would stop, for it is doleful weather. Wonderful news from France! What a

horrid business about the Irish mail boat!
