30th November 1918

My dear Buchan,
Your letter of yesterday's date overwhelms
me. It is much too kind. I have only done a very little
bit. I wish I could have done more. It has been a great
pleasure to me, and my work has been made very easy by the
assistance of the very kind friends whom I have met in
the matter. The War is certainly over, but a lot remains
to be done, and if an opportunity offers, I shall be only
too willing to give similar help in the Public Service.

If you will let me say so, I think the
Country owes you a very great debt. The hard work in
the Ministry has been done by those who are not seen by
the Public, and their long and unselfish devotion is greatly
appreciated by those who know and have seen the true moving power.

I trust very much that we may meet in other
spheres, particularly in the Mountains.
Yours faithfully,
John J. Withers
Personal.
