My dear John,
I wonder if you & Susie will be astonished to hear that I am going to be married and to Nina Johnstone-Douglas - soon I hope. I should like to have both of your blessings, my ancient friend. I would have let you know several days sooner, but the "old man" made a fuss about anyone

knowing until settlements were agreed on.
I regard myself as a very lucky fellow. It would be a pretty tough struggle ( & wont be easy in any case) if I had not been re-appointed an Advocate-Depute by the Lord advocate but in ones life one cannot play for safety always.
And now about yourself. I saw you were made a burger of that ancient city capital of Tweeddale & although I should have liked you to have had a

day to yourself or at least with somebody a little more interesting than that somewhat spiessburgerlich (hush) former political opponent, still it was to me and my people a great excitement.
Are you out of the treadmill? I am very glad to be out of uniform and settling down to work.
But the houses! Very difficultt problem.
Have you seen Johnnie [ST: (Jameson)] M.P. His maiden speech was just himsel. I was disappointed not to see your name among the Parliamentary candidates. Why didn't you go in? Perhaps the next election will be the real election & will tempt you. I saw Hugh Walpole in Edinh soon after I came back early in January.
Love to Susie Master John & the family from
Yours ever
