My dearest wee Mother

Your kind letter which I got last night made me very sad, for I fear your health is pretty bad. I am desperately sorry for you, wee body, and very remorseful that my [pride] has "shamed you in the eyes of your kind". It was very selfish of me, but I didn't realise how you felt. But please, please, take care of your health, my wee Mother.

Maclean spoke to me on the telephone last night. I said the Saturday, Feb 1 would suit me, & he thinks it would suit him. He will let Walter know. In that case we would come up to Edinburgh on Friday, the 31st, & to Peebles on the Saturday morning.

We will certainly go & see Miss Orr. But will you tell me what

she is doing in a men's college.? We go to Oxford on Monday at noon, & our address till the following Saturday morning will be 3 Oriel Street.

I wonder if you would find for me among father's books one called the Orkneyinga Saga. It would be very useful to me just now for my Harvard lectures. It will probably be at Broughton.

Very many thanks for the haggis & mealy puddings, which arrived last night. You are far too kind.

Susie & I went down to Buckinghamshire yeaterday to look at a house, but it was no good. It was a jolly fresh blowing day, & I greatly enjoyed it. To day Alice is being taken to a pantomime, & I am taking Mr John for a row in Regents Park later.

We are all very well

Much love

[illegible]

John
