My dearest wee Mother
This is bitterly cold weather here, but I gather it is better in Scotland. Fred Balfour came to see me yesterday. Margaret is coming up to London this week-end, but will be back in Edinburgh next week, when we hope to see her. Susie is in a desperate creel over servants, so I fear it will be necessary for us to go back to London on Saturday week. That will give us about a week in Peebles.
We went to dine at Claridge's last night, but Susie had mistaken the date, & our hostess had not arrived. So

we went off and ate a modest dinner at Pagani's.
The children are very well & funny, but heartbroken that they cannot come to Scotland. They are pining to see you & Nan. I have the first cold I have had this winter, but I think it is yielding to treatment. My voice, like Annie Laurie's, is low & sweet.!
I do hope you are fairly well, my wee body.
Much love to all
[illegible]
John
