My bonny wee Mother
I got very kind letters from you on Saturday & this morning. What an impident dog Jim is to complain of your ousting Aunt Aggy, as if you hadn't saved the house for her.! You must have had a job getting Gala Lodge straight[ST - Gala Lodge in Broughton]. I hope you

haven't tired yourself too much. We had a wonderful day at Elsfield on Saturday. The place was looking delicious. I got out a builder to turn in an estimate for the bathrooms etc., & I fixed up about the gardener. We may be allowed to start work in August, in which case we will get in before the

end of the year. It will be an expensive business, but it is once for all! Mrs Grosvenor came to dine on Saturday night. Yesterday & to day are rather colder, I am dining with Harold Baker to night. With great regret I have refused the General Assembly's invitation.
I had a nice letter yesterday from the King about 'Mr Standfast'. I will send a

copy to day to Mrs William Brown, but not to Mrs Orr. I can't send books to people I never met; it is too absurd. I will send you a copy to send if you like.
How I wish your dream was true & old William was coming back to see Elsfield!
Much love, my dear wee body
from
John
