HOUGHTON-MIFFLIN-COMPANY 4 PARK STREET - BOSTON

July 14, 1919.

Dear Buchan:

Your letter of June 16 arrived something like a week ago. It was followed some days later by the memorial volume, which I have read with very profound interest. I appreciate deeply both the quality of the gift itself and the spirit of the sending.

It was the sons of my friends, rather than my friends, who were killed in the war, barring two on the Lusitania. I can nevertheless enter very fully, I think, into the mood which led to the volume.

I hope you are not limiting the distribution too narrowly to your own family. The men in the group come back in your pages with a kind of perdurable life, which is a species of immortality. I suppose, at least that there will be copies in the British Museum and the Bodleian. Think what it would mean to you to find a similar book written by some worthy of the seventeenth century, and do your duty by the scholars of 2219.

Faithfully yours,

Ferris Greenslet
