My dear John Many thanks for your note and for the book which I thoroughly enjoyed. The sketches of friends are most amusing, but there is also much else of value contained. My

only criticism would be that the picture of Sutherland does not quite hit him off. Please tell your wife how much I liked her work - but I think I also saw traces of another familiar hand. I imagine

you are marooned in Scotland and wont get back to London on the day you mention.
