My dearest wee Mother

Alice was very pleased with the book Walter sent her & which arrived yesterday. She couldn't be torn from it all day. Mr John played

happily with his gun.

Susie didn't come up with me, as I thought she should take the day off, so I went up alone to Elsfield & worked a big days work. I have finished my books & library at last. I had tea with the parson &

walked home in a torrent of rain.

This morning it is very wet. We are going to tackle some picture-hanging. We are meeting the children for tea at Mrs [Hazlitt's?] house.

It is a good thing to have got Xmas over & I'm sure

you will be glad. But you have still Ne'erday before you, which we don't suffer from [?] here. I do hope, when I come to Scotland on the 19th, that I shall find you fairly well
