PEN ROSE, BERKHAMSTED.

March 23 1920

Dear John

I have spent a delightful afternoon sitting out in the arbour under the murmur of innumerable bees, reading through your South African Forces at a good slogging pace, and have now read everything except the appendices. It could not have been better done. The tactical history is perfectly clear, and is interwoven with personal incidents and the sense of the collective heroism of it all, and is placed in its setting in the bigger strategy and issues which are finely touched in.

I am sure they ought to be pleased in South Africa. Marrières Wood is the finest story of the lot; it has all the qualities for a great episode in the War, including importance.

The "face-at-the-window" is fast developing into a great family joke.

Yours ever

George Trevelyan
